Die Story
Das Buch war ein absoluter BookTok- und Bookstagram-Hype. Ich mein: guckt es euch an. Was ein Cover. Im Spätherbst 2024 habe ich mich entschlossen, das Buch endlich zu lesen. Was passt besser zu schmuddeligem, gemütlichem Couch-Wetter als eine Horrorgeschichte? Das Setting überzeugt: Mexiko in den 1950er Jahren, Glamour trifft auf eine konservative Familie mit vielen Geheimnissen. Doch leider passiert wirklich lang wirklich wenig, was mich am Ende auch dazu gebracht hat, zum Hörbuch zu wechseln. Rund 3/4 des Buchs läuft die Geschichte an, bis im letzten Viertel wirklich was passiert. Zwar ist das Buch gut geschrieben, aber der Spannungsaufbau hat viel zu lang gedauert und die unheimlichen Elemente wurden so spät eingeführt, dass der „Horror“ für mich nicht gewirkt hat. Wie viele andere BookTok-Hypes sehe ich auch dieses Buch eher als Verfilmung. Visuell aufbereitet wirken der Glamour und die unheimlichen Elemente wahrscheinlich um einiges besser. Für mich leider eher ein Flop.

Frankie Corzo spricht gut, ihre Stimme hat allerdings etwas Strenges, was für mich nicht zur Geschichte passt.
